Where the Forest Meets the River
There's a bend in the Denwa where the river slows, the sal canopy closes overhead, and the noise of the world thins to bird call and water sound. We chose this stretch of forest, just past the Pachmarhi turn, in the small village of Matkuli, to build The Rustik, Satpuda: a warm, owner-run riverside resort in Matkuli on the boundary of Satpura Tiger Reserve. The property was put together room by room with local stone, salvaged teak, hand-loomed textiles, and lamplight that earns its place: twenty-four cottages across eight room types, every one of them with the forest within reach, opened to guests in November 2025 by Satpuda Nature Homes Private Limited.
It's the kind of place where the staff knows the safari driver's wife, the chef knows what's in season at the village mandi, and the naturalist knows which trail had a leopard sighting yesterday. Mornings begin with chai on the deck as the mist lifts off the river and end with a fire on the lawn under the stars. In between, there are stone-walled Heritage Rooms by the water, two-storey teak Wooden Villas raised above the bank, lawn-side Deluxe Cottages, and valley-facing Hill View suites that catch the Pachmarhi sunset. We didn't want to build a hotel; we wanted a forest house, scaled up just enough to share.
Families, couples, and small groups find their way to us from across the country: long-weekend regulars from Bhopal and Indore, monsoon travellers from Maharashtra, Diwali families from Gujarat, and pilgrims and trekkers pairing a Pachmarhi visit with a slow forest night by the Denwa.
A Resort That Earns Its Location
We keep things intimate by design. A team small enough to make hospitality feel like welcome rather than service. Wood-fired Gond and Baiga kitchens that pull from the village garden each morning, with chai brewed slow on the same fire that bakes the night's bread. Naturalist-led safaris run by people who grew up reading the forest floor: who can tell a sambar alarm call from a langur's, and who know which bend of the Denwa the otters favour at dusk. Everything we do is built around one quiet promise: when you come to the forest, the forest should reach you.
